Our Mission

Proclaim the Good News of Christ. Share our Gifts. Bring all People Together.

Our Vision For the Future

Our Godly vision is of a congregation that is twice the size that it is today, with the clergy and staff to support the active life of such a church. Our finances will be healthy and will allow us to pursue evangelism and outreach efforts, as well as focused ministries, including ministry to young people and to seniors.

History of St. James

St. James Episcopal Church was established in 1937 during the administration of Bishop Clinton Quin, with the Rev. Thomas Clarkson serving as Priest-in-Charge, followed one year later by the Rev. Thomas Bagby. In l940, a new church was erected and received parish status. The Rev. B. Bagby was succeeded by the Rev. Robert L. Johnson. Under his leadership the church grew and the physical plant was expanded to include classrooms, library, and a parish hall.

The Rector during a most crucial period in the history of St. James was the Rev. Keith Bardin. By the end of his tenure in l962 a well established, open pattern was embraced and African-Americans became an integral part of the church. Following Rev. Bardin the church was served by six interim and four permanent rectors, each of whom made significant contributions to the growth of the church. During the administration of the Rev. John Sanders, with the assistance of fellow priests Penrose Hirst, John Worrell and Albert Ettling, a ministry with local universities, Rice, Texas Southern and the University of Houston, was established.

In l970 the Rev. James L. Tucker became the rector and remained for 22 years, until his retirement. The tenure of the Rev. Antoine Campbell extended from 1994 to 1999 during which period the following ministries began: the Jazz Eucharist, Jubilee Ministry, Keepers, and the Wednesday Bunch.

The Rev. Irving Cutter IV served from 2000 to 2006. In 2003 the sanctuary was completely demolished by a tornado. Plans were developed to build a new sanctuary. Hundred of significant donations from church members and many others in Houston and around the United States were given to assist in this project. The dedication of the new sanctuary was celebrated Palm Sunday 2007, by the Right Reverend Don Wimberly, Bishop of the Diocese of Texas who conducted the dedication service.
